Erica Daniels, a Pennsylvania woman who treats her son’s autism with medical cannabis, will be among PA moms featured in the April 26 episode of VICELAND’s “Weediquette.”
Daniels, who recently published “Cooking with Leo,” an autism-friendly cookbook, traveled to Colorado to get medical cannabis. She’s among the several hundred parents in Pennsylvania who have received Safe Harbor letters from Gov. Tom Wolf.
The letter allows parents to treat their severely ill children with cannabis without fear of arrest or prosecution. The Safe Harbor initiative was launched in conjunction with the state’s medical marijuana program which is expected to be underway sometime next year.
Daniels recently wrote a piece for Autism Awareness Month in which she discusses “green medicine.” Here’s a portion of her essay that covers medical cannabis for autism:
“There is currently no one treatment for autism, no cure for autism and no medical explanation for autism that has been accepted. Science is quickly revealing that whole plant cannabis immediately treats the outward symptoms of autism while working long term to repair neurologic function. Patients with autism have a damaged endocannabinoid system according to researchers in the field. In this case, adding medical cannabis to an overall treatment protocol for autism just makes sense. Medical cannabis may likely be the missing piece in the treatment of autism.
I happen to live in the only state that considers autism a qualifying condition and is developing a cultivation program. The challenges with this very sensible treatment option, for the world’s largest childhood epidemic, lie in the stigma of marijuana, the harsh laws, specifically federal laws that hold marijuana a schedule one controlled substance. Conversely, there is no stigma in taking pharmaceutical medications that have many side effects. Cannabis has no significant side effects.”
Erica Daniels is the Author of Cooking with Leo: An Allergen-Free Autism Family Cookbook, Autism Advocate, Medical Cannabis Activist, and Public Speaker and mother of a child with autism. For the month of April all proceeds from Erica’s book, Cooking with Leo, will be donated to autism research.
